Keeping the cold chain

Most injectables that need refrigeration tolerate a defined period at room temperature, stated in their instructions. The risk in travel is not usually a few warm hours; it is a cool bag that failed hours ago without telling you.

• Check the product's own storage instructions first — the in-use and out-of-fridge allowances are printed and differ by product.
• Use an insulated case rated for the duration, not an unrated one that feels cold to the hand.
• Avoid direct contact with ice packs, which can take a product below its acceptable range as easily as heat takes it above.
• Consider a temperature indicator if the trip is long; it converts a guess into an observation.
• Never leave medication in a car, where interior temperature moves far beyond ambient in both directions.

Documentation and border rules

Requirements vary by country, and this is a genuine legal question rather than a logistical one. Some jurisdictions require a prescription or a doctor's letter for carrying prescription injectables; some restrict quantities; and unapproved compounds may not be legal to import at all regardless of your intent.

• Keep products in original labelled packaging. A labelled box answers most questions without a conversation.
• Carry a copy of the prescription and, for longer trips, a letter from the prescriber naming the medication and the need for it.
• Check the destination's rules in advance with an official source — an embassy or the relevant health authority, not a forum.
• For unapproved compounds, understand that legality differs by country and that carrying them across a border is not a record-keeping question.

Sharps

• Take a travel sharps container — used needles must not go in general waste, in any country.
• Find out how the destination handles sharps disposal before you arrive; pharmacies are often the answer, but not universally.
• Never repack a used needle loosely, and never place one in checked luggage.
• Bring more needles than you expect to need. They weigh nothing and they are the item you cannot improvise.

What to do with your log before you leave

1. Export a copy and store it somewhere independent of the phone in your pocket. See exporting your log.
2. Confirm the app works offline. Aeroplanes, foreign networks and roaming gaps are exactly when you will be logging.
3. Check your reminders against the destination time zone, and decide deliberately whether a weekly injection moves with you or stays on home time — then record which you chose.
4. Note the travel period in the log itself, so any change in pattern has an explanation attached six months later.
