Storage and expiry tracking

Every vial has two clocks. The first is the printed expiry or beyond-use date, which applies to the unopened product. The second starts the moment you reconstitute or first puncture it, and it is almost always shorter. Only the first is printed — the second exists only if you record it.

The second clock is where things go wrong, because nothing about a vial's appearance announces that it has been open too long. This applies equally to a research peptide, a pharmacy-compounded GLP-1 vial with a beyond-use date, and a manufacturer pen with an in-use limit after first use.
Storing the sealed product
- Lyophilised powder is the stable form — it is why peptides ship dry. Suppliers typically specify refrigerated or freezer storage, protected from light.
- Repeated freeze–thaw cycles are generally to be avoided; deciding where a vial lives before it arrives is better than moving it repeatedly.
- Manufacturer-labelled products state their own storage requirements on the carton, and those override any general guidance.
- Record where a vial is stored if you use more than one location. "Which fridge?" is a real question at 7am.
After reconstitution
Once in solution, a peptide is considerably less stable than it was dry, and the vial is now also a container that has been punctured. Two things follow:
- The diluent matters. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol precisely so a vial can be accessed more than once. Plain sterile water has no preservative.
- The in-use window is finite, and the supplier or pharmacy usually states one. If nothing is stated for a research product, that absence is itself information about the product's documentation.
What to record per vial
- Received date and printed expiry.
- Reconstitution or first-use date — clock two starts here.
- Discard date, calculated once and stored, not recalculated each time you wonder.
- Diluent type and volume.
- Storage location, if you use more than one.
- Appearance notes at reconstitution, so a later change is comparable to something.

When to stop using a vial
- The stated in-use window has passed.
- The solution's appearance has changed — cloudiness, particles, or a colour shift that was not there at reconstitution (note that GHK-Cu is blue from the start; that is not a change).
- The stopper has been punctured more times than a stopper reasonably tolerates.
- There is any doubt about how it was stored — a vial left out overnight is a discard decision, not a judgement call.
Frequently asked questions
How long does reconstituted peptide last?
It depends on the compound, the diluent and the storage conditions, and the supplier or pharmacy generally states a window. What is universal is that reconstituted solution has a considerably shorter usable life than the sealed dry powder, and that the window only exists in your records if you write down when you opened it.
What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits bacterial growth and is why it is used for vials accessed more than once. Plain sterile water contains no preservative and is intended for single use.
What is a beyond-use date?
The date assigned by a compounding pharmacy after which its preparation should not be used. It is set by the pharmacy for that specific preparation and is not the same as a manufacturer's expiry date.
Do pens have an in-use limit too?
Yes. Manufacturer pens typically have a defined in-use window after first use, often with different storage conditions from the unopened pen. It is stated in the product's instructions and, like a vial's window, only exists in your history if you record the first-use date.
